Description

This position is a high priority for our District for the 2024-2025 year and is contingent upon continued available district, grant and state funding.
 College of the Canyons is seeking a faculty leader in the area of STEM/LatinX Counseling. The STEM/LatinX Counselor actively serves and promotes student success for all students through a curriculum and pedagogy responsive to supporting and uplifting STEM/LatinX students. The STEM/LatinX counselor will assist LatinX and other student populations in transitioning into and connecting with the campus community, enhancing cultural and educational experiences, and increasing persistence and retention rates in order to achieve their educational goals. The STEM/LatinX Counselor serves as a generalist and a regular member of the Counseling Department faculty committed to the academic success, personal growth, and self-actualization of LatinX and other students.

The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by LatinX students in higher education, particularly within the STEM disciplines. This individual should demonstrate expertise in providing academic advising, career guidance, and individual support tailored to the needs of LatinX / STEM students. Counselors should have a passion for fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education.

This is an 11-MONTH professional, full-time tenure track position beginning July 1, 2024. The position may include a combination of teaching, department, college, and community leadership functions. Assignment may include day, evening, and weekend duties at all District sites.
 

Example of Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Collaborates with campus faculty, staff, students, and departments in advocating for our STEM/LatinX student success.
  • Collaborates and participates as a contributing member with the STEM/LatinX and the Intercultural Center to ensure a cohesive and holistic counseling approach for our STEM/LatinX students.
  • Conducts face-to-face and online academic, career, transfer and life-skills counseling to the STEM/LatinX students and general student populations.
  • Counsels students by assisting them in choosing and planning immediate and long- range educational goals, including developing abbreviated and comprehensive student education plans; assisting with students' career exploration, program selection and recommending adjustments to college and personal development.
  • Evaluates student aptitudes, abilities, and interests to advise them regarding career paths, career uncertainty, current and future employment trends.
  • Interprets certificate, associate degree, and transfer-related requirements.
  • Evaluates transcripts, clears prerequisites, processes graduation petitions and other college forms, as needed. 
  • Provides students with information regarding college and community resources, assists students with the procedures for enrollment, placement, financial aid and academic progress.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of special programs and services that focus on student equity and promoting student retention.
  • Develops college orientations, workshops related to educational and career planning, probation, study skills, and other topics to support student success.
  • Facilitates orientations, workshops, and presentations for new and continuing students.
  • Conducts follow-up services to students experiencing academic difficulties such as students on academic probation, academic dismissal, and students with excessive units.
  • Enter counseling notes and appropriate reason codes for the counseling appointment. Ensure that all data elements are entered into the District's electronic record-keeping software Teaches credit and noncredit Counseling courses, in accordance with established course outlines.
  • Participates in the development, implementation, evaluation, and revision of curriculum; assesses student learning outcomes at the course and program review levels.
  • Engages in activities that enhance rapport with local high school, community and industry partners, and/or four-year institutions.
  • Participates in institutional committee assignments, student recruitment and retention, shared governance, and campus life activities.
  • Develops and revises appropriate credit and noncredit program and course curriculum in response to discipline and workforce needs. 
  • Maintains office hours (if teaching is part of the assignment) and participates in department, division, and college committees and governance.
  • Participates in departmental and collegewide program reviews.
  • Participates in additional faculty responsibilities, including college decision-making activities related to professional and academic matters. The activities will occur within the department as well as in the larger college setting and at all district campuses.
  • Engages in ongoing professional development and preparation related to best practices associated with pedagogy, andragogy, and all instructional (including virtual) teaching modalities to address anticipated student and instructional delivery needs.
  • Participates in all course, program and institutional Student Learning Outcome (SLO) assessment processes.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Counseling faculty members at College of the Canyons facilitate student learning by working to develop every student’s abilities and by designing varied and exciting learning environments.
  • Counseling faculty members work as team members with all staff, create innovations in teaching and learning methods, and work to provide an environment for students to be partners in learning.
  • Counseling faculty members also assist in program planning, carry out related projects and evaluate related department programs and faculty.
  • Counseling faculty members carry out their professional responsibilities by participating in the college decision-making activities related to academic and professional matters via meetings, by participating on project teams, by engaging in ongoing and meaningful professional development, and by providing support to students on a one-to-one and small group basis at regularly scheduled times.
 
In addition to professional expertise in teaching within the discipline, applicants should possess the following abilities and attitudes that have been identified as important to successful performance in the position.

Qualifications and Minimum Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possession of an unexpired California Community College Counselor Credential,
OR
  • Master’s in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling,
OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT).

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bilingual (Spanish-English)
  • Recent experience working with African American, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom, and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education and the field of Counseling shape patterns of participation 
  • Ability to support historically marginalized and underserved student populations enrolled in STEM programs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES:
  • Experience with programs that promote student equity, inclusion, and LatinX/STEM excellence.
  • Experience with, or knowledge of, approaches, theories, and strategies related to supporting historically marginalized students.
  • Experience as a Counselor in higher education, preferably at a community college.

SALARY PLACEMENT
Eleven (11) month position; anticipated starting date July 1, 2024. Initial Salary Placement on Academic Salary Schedule 1 is dependent on education and experience. Initial Salary Placement Range is from $87,228– $138,696 annually (adjusted for 12 months of pay per year). PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Position will require extended periods presenting material in an office or classroom setting, and frequent periods of movement from one area to another, which may include traversing to different floors of a building. Requires use of a computer and related equipment; frequent exertion of 10-20 pounds of force to move objects; communicating and providing information to others; and travel from site-to-site. In the event of an emergency, employees will be relied upon to serve as emergency workers.
