This position is a high priority for our District for the 2023-2024 year.

Salary Placement: This educational administrator position is twelve (12) months per year and will be on an individual, multi-year contract and exempt from overtime and compensatory time accumulation. Salary placement is on the administrative salary schedule, Range 20, starting on steps 1 to 3 and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. An excellent benefit package including medical, vision, dental, life and Section 125 is offered.

"BIG PICTURE" RESPONSIBILITY


Under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent/Vice President of Instruction, the Dean of Kinesiology, Health and Wellness, Fitness, and Athletics must demonstrate visionary leadership in support of teaching excellence, coaching excellence, competitive excellence and student learning, with the goal of student success and continuous improvement of programs and services. The Dean ensures division compliance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations, including Title IX and the CCCAA, board policies, and the protocols and integrity of communication associated with campus decision making and organizational structure. Within the scope of this position, new components may be added or deleted based on evolving needs by the district or community.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Leadership

  • Leads the overall operations of the Physical Education, Kinesiology, and Athletics Division.  Promotes a dynamic environment that allows for faculty, staff, and coaches to flourish and encourages innovation and excellence across the division.
  • Leads in the development of wellness programs and other opportunities to support the campus and local communities. Represents College of the Canyons in the community as an entrepreneur, cultivator of new ideas, and identifier of resources to best serve the evolving needs of our students, staff, emerging programs, and the community.
  • Supervises and provides work direction to the Athletic Director.
Planning
  • Facilitates the development and integration of ideas into the strategic plan for the District with input from departments chairs, directors, coaches, staff, and colleagues. Initiates and encourages the development and exchange of innovative ideas within the division. Plans both the short- and long-term goals and objectives for the division and provides the support necessary to achieve those goals.
  • Plans, monitors, and oversees the administration of division budgets and expenditures.  Strategically allocates resources to support division needs including those of individual teams, as well as the needs related to the instruction of Physical Education, Health, Kinesiology, and Recreation Management. Identifies and works to secure outside funding opportunities. Ensures the proper execution of grant and contract funds by assisting with planning, implementing grant budgets and ensuring reports are prepared in a timely manner for local, state and federal grants.
  • Collaborates with faculty to develop curriculum and funding proposals in response to student, workforce, and community needs, including establishment and use of student learning outcomes. Leads the faculty to design new credit and noncredit opportunities to enhance student access and success within the division and conducts outreach to K-16, business, and industry to respond to evolving workforce development and community needs. Develops marketing strategies for credit and noncredit classes as well as Community Education offerings.
  • Formulates and recommends the final schedule of classes to the Instruction office and ensures it meets the needs of students using a Guided Pathways framework. Facilitates input from department chairs, faculty, the Athletic Director, and staff to ensure that the academic mission works seamlessly with the needs of instruction, practice, and competition. Reviews with faculty and staff the selection and approval of textbooks, supplies, materials, equipment maintenance and inventory to support all instructional offerings and athletic competitions.
  • Initiates and leads the innovation and continual improvement of the College’s academic programs through effective communication, overseeing instructional program planning and systematic program reviews. Seizes and makes the most of opportunities to support and enhance the division and build bridges within the college and with the community. Recommends changes to maintain relevance of division programs with respect to the District’s Educational & Facilities Master Plan, Strategic Plan, and annual program and budget reviews.
Communication and Coordination
  • Ensures the communication and enforcement of applicable policies and procedures as required and stipulated in Federal law, the California Community Colleges Athletic Association (CCCAA), college policies, administrative procedures, program certification and accreditation, articulation activities with colleges and universities, and local, state and federal guidelines, such as Title IX.
  • Actively supports institutional accreditation and program-specific accreditation processes. Monitors and communicates changes to the Office of Instruction related to accreditation standards affecting the division. In conjunction with the Athletic Director, prepares reports for the Western State Conference Program Review, as well as other reporting requirements, including contributing to the College’s self-evaluation reports.
  • Participates in and provides leadership to several personnel related processes for the division including hiring, orienting, scheduling, and evaluating faculty, coaches and staff. Ensures compliance with AB 1725, Education Code, Title 5, collective bargaining agreements, college policies and procedures, and accreditation rules and regulations. Promotes, encourages, and provides opportunities for staff development and participation in community outreach activities.
  • Works closely with the Institutional Research Department to conduct an annual survey related to student interests in competition.  Responsible for annual reports to the Federal Government via the Equity in Athletics Data Analysis (EADA) and related reports to the Western State Conference and CCCAA.
  • Works closely with the Public Information Office (PIO) and Athletics Director to promote and market the competition programs within the division. Ensures that the Sports Information Director and other PIO staff have access to coaches, players and staff.  Ensures that all statistical reporting and websites are accurate and complete.
  • Assists in the recruitment of students within the Division’s curricular offerings and services. Serves as an advocate for students.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with regional educational institutions, local business, and community supporters. Assists faculty and coaches in fund raising activities designed to enhance the overall program.  
  • Serves as District Representative on relevant campus committees, the local community and statewide organizations, events and meetings, and professional organizations. Participates in professional development opportunities, and models continuous learning and improvement. Guides faculty in the development of advisory committees and provides support in working with advisory committee members.
  • Ensures that competitive events meet the standards expected by the College, California Community College Athletic Association, and the Western State Conference.  Supervises the Athletic Director in game management, away competition travel and all other aspects of two-year college competition.
  • Makes written and oral presentations on behalf of the College.
  • Serves as Night Administrator and Incident Command System (ICS) as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Minimum Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
(Requirements 1 and 2 must be met in order to qualify for the position):
Education (Requirement #1):
Possession of a master’s degree from an accredited college or university in a discipline reasonably related to the assignment, Doctorate or Ph.D. in educational leadership preferred; (See our website for evaluation requirements for units and degrees earned at foreign institutions).
Experience (Requirement #2):
Option #1:
Two (2) years of academic administrative experience in an institution of higher education reasonably related to the assignment OR 
Option #2:

  1. A minimum of two (2) years of successful full-time leadership experience reasonably related to the administrator's administrative assignment; AND
  2. A minimum of one (1) year of successful full-time experience providing leadership for a major district-level initiative/program; AND
  3. Completion of a leadership training program of at least one (1) semester in duration.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Three (3) years recent academic or professional experience in one of the professional areas in the discipline (Kinesiology, Health and Wellness, Fitness, Athletics, Recreation Management);
  • One or more years of responsible experience in developing, implementing and managing Kinesiology, Health and Wellness, Fitness, Athletics, Recreation Management Division programs in a college, university, or district post-secondary educational setting.  Includes program and curriculum development processes as well as leading the implementation and approval for the local and state levels;
  • Demonstrated successful experience networking with the community in support of Kinesiology, Health and Wellness, Fitness, Athletics, and Recreation Management programs and services;
  • Demonstrated successful experience using data, surveys and student/community input to develop new and revise existing curriculum;
  • Prior teaching experience at the college or university level in one or more areas to which the Dean position is assigned;
  • Demonstrated successful experience acquiring program, division or institutional resources and facilitating partnerships between local and regional business and industry and the campus community;
  • Demonstrated experience related to innovations in instructional technology, methods and student learning;
  • Demonstrated experience related to basic skills and student success;
  • Demonstrated successful experience leading programs related to the administrative assignment, including: strategic planning and decision making; staffing, evaluation, and supervision; and developing and managing budgets; and
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively plan, meet deadlines and establish structures, systems, and processes to reach goals and objectives with initiative and to completion.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS
Position requires sitting and viewing a computer monitor for extended periods of time plus frequent periods of standing and walking, which may include climbing staircases; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and related equipment; reaching, bending, kneeling, crawling and stooping; frequently exert 10-20 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects; hearing and speaking to communicate and provide information to others; vision to read printed material and computer monitor; handling and working with various materials and objects; and travel from site-to-site.
