Adjunct Head Coach - Men and Women's Rodeo

$5,000.00/year in season and $5,000.00/out of season recruiting
The selected candidate will also be assigned teaching load valued at $11,900 for the Fall/23 semester and $5,950 for the Spring/24 semester.

Position Duties

West Hills College Coalinga is looking for an individual to assume the overall responsibilities of the rodeo program. The selected individual will be expected to teach rodeo classes, communicate with students/athletes, recruit students/athletes for the program, supervise study sessions, develop and manage the rodeo budget and follow the policies, procedures and guidelines of the District, Athletic Department, California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) and the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA).
 
In coordination with the Associate Dean of Athletics, the coach is responsible for working with the Maintenance and Operations Department to ensure the maintenance of the rodeo facilities, including arena, horse and stock pens, as well as purchasing and care and feeding of practice stock. The coach must work with staff and students to ensure the humane treatment and health of all livestock. The coach coordinates all rodeo events with appropriate campus and community personnel, e.g. Police, Risk Management, Contracts and Procurement, Maintenance and Operations, and Farm of the Future Operations.
 
 This individual must be dedicated to serving students of diverse backgrounds and educational levels.
 
 Essential Duties

  • Coach and direct the WHC Coalinga men and women’s rodeo teams.
  • Recruit students/athletes.
  • Advise and assist students.
  • Provide direction for all facets of a successful rodeo program.
  • Select and supervise assistant coaches and general supervision of support staff.
  • Foster supportive relationships in the community that promote the rodeo program as well as the college. 
  • Assist student athletes in completing their academic requirements at the community college to transfer to four-year institutions or to achieve their career goals.
  • Plan and coordinate fund raising activities that support the rodeo program.
  • Work with the Athletic Director to prepare and maintain an annual budget.
  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate the annual West Hills College Coalinga Rodeo.
  • Assist in the procurement of livestock used for instruction and ensure proper care of livestock.
  • Work with staff to maintain rodeo arena and livestock facilities.
  • Coordinate with the financial aid department in issuing scholarships to student athletes.
  • Participate in collaborative relationships with students, faculty, administrators, and the community.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Must be student centered/oriented and supportive of the community college philosophy.
  • Must be willing to lead recruitment efforts.
  • Demonstrated leadership and oversight of a rodeo program.
  • Knowledge of college rodeo best practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of each of the college rodeo events, and effective coaching methods for each.
  • Knowledge of National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) rules and policies governing college rodeo players and staff.
  • High regard for sportsmanship and academic achievement and ensure that major decisions are made in collaboration with other college officials.
  • Ability to develop resources on and off campus in support of programs.
  • Strong supervisory skills. Ability to train employees, volunteers, and students in operation of programs.
  • Ability to maintain the health and welfare of livestock.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with students and staff, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to manage rodeo arena preparation for safety of various events.
  • Knowledge of community outreach and the ability to attend and manage participation.
  • Ability to manage college rodeo program including but not limited to soliciting funding, selling sponsorship, advertising, and selecting and contracting personnel for rodeo. 
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, and disability backgrounds of community college students.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional growth and development through memberships in regional, state and national organizations or other activities appropriate to the discipline or assignment.
  • Knowledge and computer skills in word processing, desktop publishing, spreadsheets and other basic functions (email, internet, etc.).
  • Ability to use standard office equipment (copier, fax machine, etc.).
  • Bilingual preferred (but not required).
Working Conditions
 Accept the physical risk working with livestock and equipment related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Qualification

Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, cultural, disability, religious background of community college students.

Bachelor's degree and two years of experience, or any associate degree and six years of experience. Some successful high school/community college/university level rodeo coaching experience; athletic recruiting experience; fundraising experience; involvement in community organizations and activities.
 
Experience as a rodeo contestant and/or current membership of a professional rodeo association is preferred.
