 The Santa Clarita Community College District/College of the Canyons is seeking a full-time Central Plant Operator in the Facilities Services Division.

"BIG PICTURE" RESPONSIBILITY:

Under the supervision of the Associate Vice President, Facilities Operations, under work direction of the Facilities Coordinator, performs skilled journey-level air conditioning and heating work in the construction, installation, trouble shooting, repair alteration and maintenance of a variety of air conditioning and heating systems. Provides hands-on maintenance, operation and troubleshooting of all Central Plant related equipment and pneumatic and direct digital controls. Performs other semi-skilled and skilled maintenance, repair and construction tasks in the upkeep of District facilities.  Performs other related duties as assigned.

Canyons Hall

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  1. Maintains current knowledge and is responsible for understanding and applying codes and regulations pertaining to area of expertise.
  2. Monitors and documents the operation and maintenance of all HVAC-related equipment installed at the Central Plant and other District facilities.
  3. Lays out, assembles, installs, tests, maintains, trouble shoots and repairs district building’s air conditioning and heating systems and related equipment.
  4. Installs, maintains and repairs a wide variety of air conditioning and heating systems, from small window units and mini-split systems to chillers (standard and absorption), pumps, cooling towers, air handling units, fan coils, exhaust fans, dampers, ducts, piping, controls and all other conditioned air system components.
  5. Installs, maintains and repairs refrigeration systems including reach-ins, walk-ins and small refrigerators.
  6. Installs, trouble shoots and repairs air conditioning and heating controls and thermostats.
  7. Operates, maintains and troubleshoots a campus-wide, computer-based Energy Management System.
  8. Develops and assists in developing specifications, diagrams and drawings.
  9. Responsible for conducting required water treatment of HVAC equipment.
  10. Develops, prepares and maintains daily operation logs for all HVAC equipment.
  11. Manages EPA certification for the handling and management of refrigerants.
  12. Performs semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the installation, maintenance, repair, trouble shooting and construction work in the basic building maintenance trades such as carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, heating, air conditioning, locksmithing, welding, carpet and tile, metalsmithing and pool maintenance.
  13. Operates equipment such as light trucks, forklifts, tractors and other related motorized equipment.
  14. Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience:

Six (6) years of full-time experience as a journeyman in the air conditioning and heating field to include hands-on experience in the operation and maintenance of a central plant.  Experience as a building maintenance mechanic or as a skilled worker in one or more building maintenance trades. Experience with energy management systems and refrigeration equipment.

Education:

High school diploma or the equivalent completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by the completion of an approved apprenticeship program in the air conditioning and heating trade.

Licenses:

Possession and maintenance of a valid California driver's license. Possession and renewal of any professional certificates or licenses required to perform the duties of the position.

DEMONSTRATED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Position requires knowledge of:

  • Large heat exchangers, chillers, boilers, cooling towers, pumps and water treatment systems.
  • Heat recovery and energy storage systems.
  • Basic desktop computing.
  • Electrical and plumbing systems.
  • Energy Management Systems.

Position requires ability to:

  • Skillfully use a variety of tools and equipment utilized in one or more of the basic maintenance trades.
  • Perform semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the basic building maintenance trades.
  • Accurately interpret codes, regulations, policies and procedures pertaining to a variety of building maintenance tasks.
  • Use hand and machine tools of the trade.
  • Work from blue prints, shop drawings and sketches.
  • Maintain simple records and prepare reports.
  • Interpret regulations, policies and safety practices.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Work successfully in a multicultural environment.
  • Work independently with little or no supervision.
  • Maintain preventive maintenance programs.
  • Install, repair and maintain air conditioning and heating systems and all associated controls at the central plant and college facilities.
  • Troubleshoot air conditioning, heating, refrigeration, walk-ins, reach-ins, ice machines, energy management and control systems.
  • Work off-shift hours and weekends if necessary.
  • Demonstrate clear evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, staff and community.

 

 

SALARY PLACEMENT

Salary placement will be on Range 33 of Classified Represented Salary Schedule B ($5,171.00 - $8,689.00 per month).

**Initial salary step placement for new employees is customarily at step 1, 2, or 3 ($5,171.00 /$5,479.00.00 /$5,790.00 per month) of this 20-step salary range.

Probationary period for new Classified employees is six months. Work year is 12 calendar months. The normal workweek for this position is 40 hours. Paid holiday, discretionary, and sick time are provided. Ten vacation days accrue during the first year of employment. A regular work schedule will be assigned, with the ability to occasionally work a flexible schedule as needed.

DISTRICT CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEE BENEFITS:

RETIREMENT: Classified employees contribute to the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS), a defined benefit retirement plan through the State of California.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS

This position requires hand and digit dexterity to operate a variety of hand and power tools and equipment specific to the trade; walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, twisting/turning, and reaching in awkward positions to install and repair equipment; climbing stairs and ladders; pushing and pulling equipment; bending at the waist; working at heights of 50 feet or more on ladders, scaffolds or field poles; working under buildings or in confined spaces; moderate lifting (up to 50 pounds); working indoors and outdoors in varying temperatures; vision to read printed materials and to identify and distinguish wiring and equipment; hearing and speech for normal communications; and travel from site-to-site.
