This position is a high priority for our District for the 2022-2023 year and is contingent upon continued available district, grant and state funding.

The Santa Clarita Community College District/College of the Canyons is seeking a full-time Network Engineer/Analyst I in the Information Technology (IT) division.

"BIG PICTURE" RESPONSIBILITY:

Under the direction of the Executive Director of Infrastructure and Information Security, assures the reliable, secure and efficient operation of the District’s data network in support of administrative and instructional programs. Assist in the design, installation and maintenance of network communications infrastructure.  Performs other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.

 

  1. Assures the reliable and efficient operation of the District’s data network in support of administrative and instructional programs.
  1. Plans and coordinates projects with the department Executive Director, Facilities, vendors and outside contractors to accommodate district construction and renovation which requires addition or modification of communications equipment or cable plant.
  1. Assists in the design, configuration, installation, maintenance, security, environmental requirements, and management reporting for all network devices and services.
  1. Assists in the maintenance installation and configuration of the District’s communications and messaging systems.
  1. Maintains the District’s wireless network.
  1. Researches, recommends and implements network security protocols and procedures to protect the District’s electronic data and network infrastructure.
  1. Diagnoses and resolves network problems; troubleshoots workstation connections; isolates software from hardware problems; repairs equipment or refers to appropriate technicians or outside agencies; drives to various sites to conduct work.
  1. Assists with the development of bid specifications for acquisitions of network equipment and service; manages campus network projects, including construction related to cable installation and installation of network devices.
  1. Recommends proposals for intra and inter-district communication equipment additions or replacements including such activities as preparing surveys, researching proposals, preparing designs as appropriate and identifying situations where engineering resources are required.
  1. Coordinates user requests for network connections; manages and coordinates resources including available ports, cable pairs, Internet Protocol (IP) addresses and others.
  1. Maintains network documentation.
  1. Researches and evaluates new network technologies; recommends hardware and software upgrades; manages equipment and create orders.
  1. Provides remote access set-up and support; hardware, software, telephony configurations and troubleshooting.
  1. Supports and resolves problems for District wide E-mail and Internet access.
  1. Prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports related to assigned activities.
  1. Prepares status reports or documents detailing equipment usage, technical trouble response time, costs and budget review, and vendor/contractor agreements.
  1. Works in a team environment with other members of the Computer Support staff to maintain the district's network infrastructure and support users in departments and offices throughout the district.
  1. Trains and provides work direction to technicians and hourly personnel.
  1. Attends a variety of meetings as assigned; maintains current knowledge of technological advances in the field.
  1. Performs related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience:

Four (4) years increasingly responsible hands-on experience maintaining a local or wide area network with a minimum of 1000 nodes.  Analysis experience, including design, implementation and maintenance of security on a data network.  Must have experience with troubleshooting data connectivity issues and the configuration of routers, switches, firewalls, wireless units and establishing connections between various sites using VPN, DSL or point-to-point circuits.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent (120 semester units), with verifiable major coursework in Computer Networking, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Information Technology, Information Systems or other related field.  Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for up to two years of the required education on a year-for-year basis.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience directing the work of others.
  • Certifications from major network vendors.
  • Experience working in a technology related position in a community college or four-year University.

DEMONSTRATED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Position requires knowledge of: 

  1. Network principles, protocols and standards.
  1. Cabling standards for copper and air-blown fiber.
  1. Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP).
  1. Various operating systems and basic shell programming.
  1. Internet software and protocols, IP’s and related information.
  1. Server, router, switch, wireless and Vlan security issues.
  1. Remote service and client management.
  1. Bridges and routers and familiarity with IGRP, OSPF and RIP.
  1. Technical aspects of field of specialty.
  1. Oral and written communication skills.
  1. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
  1. Record-keeping techniques.

 

Position requires ability to: 

  1. Assure the reliable and efficient operation of the District’s data networks in support of administrative and instructional programs.
  1. Assist in the design of a network infrastructure to provide faculty, students and administrators secure, high-speed access to information and instruction.
  1. Install, configure and diagnose and resolve network problems.
  1. Pull, terminate and test voice and data cabling.
  1. Administer server maintenance.
  1. Install and configure computer software.
  1. Maintain current knowledge of technological advances in the field.
  1. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  1. Maintain records and prepare reports.
  1. Plan and organize work.
  1. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  1. Work independently and as a member of the Information Technology team.
  1. Demonstrate clear evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, staff and community.

SALARY PLACEMENT:

Salary placement will be on Range 56 of Classified Represented Salary Schedule B ($7,014.00 - $11,836.00 per month).

** Initial salary step placement for new employees is customarily at step 1, 2, or 3 ($7,014.00 / $7,436.00 / $7,869.00 per month) of this 20-step salary range.

 

Probationary period for new Classified employees is six months. Work year is 12 calendar months. The normal workweek for this position is 40 hours. Paid holiday, discretionary, and sick time are provided. Ten vacation days accrue during the first year of employment. A regular work schedule will be assigned, with the ability to occasionally work a flexible schedule as needed with supervisor approval.

Full-time employees are provided with a diversified program that includes medical, dental and vision insurance including dependent coverage, disability and life insurance as well as Section 125 options.  These benefits commence on the first of the month following date of hire. RETIREMENT: Classified employees contribute to the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS), a defined benefit retirement plan through the State of California.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical requirements of this position listed below are necessary in carrying out the essential job functions.

  • Must be able to lift and stack objects up to 50 pounds occasionally and frequently exert 10 to 20 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • Seeing to read various materials.
  • Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching.
  • Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.
  • Climbing ladders and working from heights.
  • Work involves sitting plus frequent periods of standing and walking, which may include climbing staircases, kneeling and crawling.
  • Must be able to perceive the nature of sound, utilize near and far vision, depth perception, provide oral information, and possess the manual dexterity to operate computers and related equipment.
  • Handle and work with various materials and objects which are essential aspects of this position.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, testing equipment and power tools.
