Definition

Orange Coast College (OCC) is seeking a full-time, equity-minded, tenure track faculty member in Aviation Maintenance commencing with the 2022 Fall semester. The primary teaching assignment involves all areas of Aviation Maintenance.  This assignment also includes curriculum and program development, participation in department, division, college committees, and participatory governance activities assuming leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole; collaboration across disciplines and the leveraging of student support resources; and participation in ongoing professional development.

The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, online, hybrid, or off-campus and is subject to change as needed. The ideal candidate for this position embraces the overall mission of Orange Coast College and the Coast Community College District, with a clear, focused commitment to supporting individualized student and employee goals through the work of Aviation Maintenance.

The Aviation Maintenance department shares OCC’s commitment to equitable outcomes; inclusive practices; and racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic diversity.  Ideal candidates for this position share OCC’s devotion to educating and improving the lives of our representative student, employee, and community populations. We currently enroll 18,705 students, the majority of whom are from racially minoritized populations: 34% of OCC’s students are Latinx, 2% are African-American, 25% are Asian, less than 1% Native American, 30% are White, and 5% are multiracial. Faculty have the opportunity to enhance their classroom methods during two professional development days during the academic year, which include learning sessions like “Digital Accessibility”, “Basic Skills:  Helping students help themselves” and “Taking a skills-based approach to teaching college students”. Student-centered activities that support OCC’s mission include campus-wide student success projects funded by the Office of Student Equity; partnerships with local Hispanic Serving four-year institutions; active programs that work to improve the academic achievement of racially minoritized students, such as PUENTE and UMOJA; Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) and Disabled Student Program and Services (DSPS).     

The Aviation Maintenance department is part of the Technology Division at Orange Coast College that serves students bound for transfer as well as job readiness.  In addition, the Aviation and Maintenance department interfaces and works in conjunction with the Engineering department currently in the Math and Sciences Division and with all of the other departments in the Technology Division.  We encourage innovative teaching as well as student and faculty engagement outside of the classroom.  The Technology Division promotes faculty work on student research, projects, community engagement, and partnerships with local institutions to promote STEM engagement through the inclusion of non-traditional gender and racially minoritized populations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:


  • Provide instruction in Aviation Maintenance in accordance with established course outlines.
  • Provide leadership in the development and revision of the Aviation Maintenance curriculum responsive to the students served.
  • Participate in curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation; participate in and develop programs to measure student performance.
  • Maintain current knowledge in the subject matter areas.
  • Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.
  • Fulfill the professional responsibilities of a full-time faculty member including, but not limited to the following: teach all scheduled classes unless excused under provisions of Board Policy; follow the department course outlines; keep accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and progress; submit student grades according to established deadlines; post and maintain scheduled office hours; participate in departmental meetings and college and/or district-wide activities and committees as assigned.
  • Ability to be a liaison, contact, and operations lead of grant projects associated or affiliated with the Aviation Maintenance department.
  • Ability to contribute to campus and district-wide professional responsibilities and activities.

  • Ability to complement existing staff, student, and community demographics in terms of professional and personal skills.
  • The assignment may include day, evening, weekend, and online sections.

Qualifications and Physical Demands

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Must meet one of the following qualifications under (1) through (5)  and demonstrated evidence of D.E.I. (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion): :
  1. Valid California Community College Instructor credential, appropriate to the subject, per Education Code 87355 (issued prior to July 1, 1990); OR
  2. Any Master's degree and professional experience directly related to the faculty member's teaching assignment; OR 
  3. Any Bachelor's degree or higher and two years of professional experience directly related to the faculty member's teaching assignment; OR
  4. Any Associate degree and six years of professional experience; OR
  5. Possess a combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent to the above. Candidates making an application on the basis of equivalency must submit an Application for Equivalency in addition to all other required materials.  Please see "Additional Information" below to determine if you need to submit an Application for Equivalency.
AND

  • Demonstrated evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the racial, ethnic, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic, academic, and cultural diversity within the community college student population, including students with different ability statuses (e.g., physical and/or learning) as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom.



Desirable Qualifications:  

  • Recent experience working with African American, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom, and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education and the field of Aviation Maintenance shape patterns of participation and outcomes.
  • Possess a current Federal Aviation Administration mechanic certificate rating for airframe and powerplant.
  • A minimum of five years of recent experience as an active airframe and powerplant mechanic in a helicopter, general aviation, airline aviation maintenance, or corporate aviation.
  • Educational and/or instructional preparation in helicopter/aviation maintenance, airframe, and power plant systems, and avionics.
  • A year or more of recent experience teaching aviation maintenance, airframe and power plant systems, and/or avionics at the post-secondary level.
  • Evidence of student success in teaching helicopter maintenance, airframe and powerplant systems, and/or avionics.
  • Evidence of participation in student success initiatives in a post-secondary setting.
  • Evidence of an ability to address the instructional needs of a diverse and frequently underprepared student population.
  • Evidence of an ability to adapt teaching pedagogy to the knowledge level (developmental through transfer) and personality of each individual and class.
  • Evidence of an ability to self-reflect and respond to an evidence-based assessment of student learning.
  • Evidence of innovation, scholarship, or leadership in the teaching of helicopter/aviation maintenance, airframe and power plant systems, and/or avionics.
  • Desire and demonstrated ability to participate actively in the department, division, and college committees and in the shared governance of Coast Community College District.
  • Desire and evidence of an ability to take on leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole.
  • Ability to work with computers and use interactive technologies to engage students in on-campus and online courses (where academically appropriate) and intrinsic motivation and ability to develop and teach online courses.
  • Experience with aerospace/aviation-related composites and or manufacturing.
  • Evidence of an ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Conditions of Employment

PAY PHILOSOPHY

(Fall 2022)  For a full-time, 2-semester, tenure-track position a maximum starting range of $57,396 to $97,854 is offered, based on the 2021-2022 salary schedule of $57,396 to $136,836. In addition, an annual stipend of $3,348 is offered for possession of an earned doctorate from an accredited institution.

Time to Refuel
Vacation
Classified, contract staff earn vacation days commensurate with years of service. Classified Management and Administrators earn 22 days vacation per year.

Sick Leave
All contract employees earn sick leave as outlined in the CA Education Code. Sick leave may be carried over from year-to-year and, upon retirement, unused sick leave may contribute to your PERS and STRS retiree benefit.

Holidays
The District observes 21 paid holidays per year.

Jury Duty, Bereavement, Military Leave
Coast grants contract employees called to jury duty a leave of absence, without loss of pay, for the entire length of required service. Other available leaves include bereavement from 3-5 days and military leaves of absence in accordance with applicable state laws.

Great Expectations
Pension Plans
The District participates in the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS) and the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) for contract employees. Non-contract employees participate in Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS) plan for the first 1,000 hours of their employment.
Additionally, it is the policy of the Coast Community College District that contract employees who retire from the District with ten or more years of service be afforded the same group insurance benefits until 70 years of age. A Medicare Supplement or GAP plan  is available to retirees and their spouses after age 70.

Annuities
The District maintains a program whereby qualified employees may request through Payroll to have a portion of his or her salary deposited under a tax sheltered annuity plan or an approved deferred compensation plan.
