THE POSITION 

Golden West College (GWC) is seeking 2 full-time, equity-minded, tenure track faculty member in sociology commencing with the 2022 fall semester. The primary teaching assignment involves all areas of sociology. This assignment also includes curriculum and program development, participation in department, division, college committees, and participatory governance activities assuming leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole; collaboration across disciplines and the leveraging of student support resources; and participation in ongoing professional development. 

 

The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, online, hybrid, or off-campus and is subject to change as needed. The ideal candidate for this position embraces the overall mission of Golden West College and the Coast Community College District, with a clear, focused commitment to supporting individualized student and employee goals through the work of accounting.

The Social Science Division at Golden West serves students with transfer degree opportunities and by providing general education breadth. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: 

  • Provide instruction in sociology in accordance with established course outlines. 

  • Provide leadership in the development and revision of the sociology curriculum responsive to the students served. 

  • Participate in curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation; participate in and develop programs to measure student performance. 

  • Maintain current knowledge in the subject matter areas. 

  • Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics. 

  • Fulfill the professional responsibilities of a full-time faculty member including, but not limited to the following: teach all scheduled classes unless excused under provisions of Board Policy; follow the department course outlines; keep accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and progress; submit student grades according to established deadlines; post and maintain scheduled office hours; participate in departmental meetings and college and/or district-wide activities and committees as assigned. 

Qualifications and Physical Demands

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION  

Must meet one of the following qualifications under (1) through (3): 

  1. Master’s in sociology; OR  

  1. Bachelor’s in sociology AND Master’s in anthropology, any ethnic studies, social work or psychology; OR  

  1. Possess a combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent to the above. Candidates making an application on the basis of equivalency must submit an Application for Equivalency in addition to all other required materials.  Please see "Additional Information" below to determine if you need to submit an Application for Equivalency.  

AND 

All candidates must demonstrate evidence of a responsiveness to and understanding of the racial, ethnic, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic, academic, and cultural diversity within the community college student population, including students with different ability statuses (e.g., physical and/or learning) as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom. 


DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS  

  • Master’s or Doctorate degree in Sociology from an accredited institution.  

  • 3 years full-time equivalent (30 sections) teaching experience in sociology as the instructor of record, with a strong emphasis on teaching a variety of electives in sociology. 

  • 1 year full time equivalent (10 sections) of in person instruction and 1 year full time equivalent (10 sections) experience and certification in distance education. 

  • Recent and successful experience teaching a variety of lower division sociology courses, in different modalities, preferably at the community college level. 

  • Teaching experience in general sociology including introduction to sociology, social problems, marriage and family, sociology of criminology, and research methods; OR general sociology with an emphasis in social justice and ethnic studies with demonstrated experience in teaching introduction to sociology, social problems, race and ethnicity, Chicana/o studies, gender studies, and LGBTQ.  

  • Demonstrated experience with community engaged pedagogies that are intersectional, culturally responsive, and social justice centered. 

  • Recent experience working with African American, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom, and student-centered practices to close equity gaps.  

  • Desire and demonstrated ability to participate actively in the department, division, and college committees and in the shared governance of Coast Community College District. 

  • Desire and evidence of an ability to take on leadership roles both within the department and in the district. 

  • Ability to work with computers and use the Internet and interactive technologies to engage students in on-campus and online courses (where academically appropriate). 

  • Evidence of an ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. 

Conditions of Employment

PAY PHILOSOPHY 

For a full-time, 2-semester, tenure-track position a maximum starting range of $57,396 to $97,854 is offered, based on the 2021-2022 salary schedule of $57,396 to $136,836. In addition, an annual stipend of $3,348 is offered for possession of an earned doctorate from an accredited institution.

Academic Senate

Time to Refuel
Vacation
Classified, contract staff earn vacation days commensurate with years of service. Classified Management and Administrators earn 22 days vacation per year.

Sick Leave
All contract employees earn sick leave as outlined in the CA Education Code. Sick leave may be carried over from year-to-year and, upon retirement, unused sick leave may contribute to your PERS and STRS retiree benefit.

Holidays
The District observes 21 paid holidays per year.

Jury Duty, Bereavement, Military Leave
Coast grants contract employees called to jury duty a leave of absence, without loss of pay, for the entire length of required service. Other available leaves include bereavement from 3-5 days and military leaves of absence in accordance with applicable state laws.

Great Expectations
Pension Plans
The District participates in the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS) and the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) for contract employees. Non-contract employees participate in Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS) plan for the first 1,000 hours of their employment.
Additionally, it is the policy of the Coast Community College District that contract employees who retire from the District with ten or more years of service be afforded the same group insurance benefits until 70 years of age. A Medicare Supplement or GAP plan  is available to retirees and their spouses after age 70.

Annuities
The District maintains a program whereby qualified employees may request through Payroll to have a portion of his or her salary deposited under a tax sheltered annuity plan or an approved deferred compensation plan.
