Starting Salary Range: $60,189 to $92,390 per year, salary placement determined by documented education and experience; maximum initial salary step placement on the faculty salary schedule is step 9. An annual doctoral stipend of $4,018 is granted to eligible faculty.

About the College: Cabrillo College is highly regarded for its success of transfer and career education, and currently serves over 11,400 students each semester. Cabrillo transfers many of its students to three nearby universities – the University of California at Santa Cruz, San Jose State University, and California State University at Monterey Bay. ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITYThis full-time, tenure track instructor will enjoy a 175-Day work schedule. The position begins on Monday, August 22, 2022 pending Governing Board ratification. Classes may be in a traditional "in class" setting, online, or hybrid format scheduled over summer and/or winter months, and at various campus locations including days, evenings, and/or weekends.


Our ideal candidate has a background in Chicana/o/x-Latina/o/x Studies, preferably with an intersectional framework. They will demonstrate an understanding of and responsiveness to the needs, concerns, and goals of community college students from diverse backgrounds including ethnicity, race, culture, language, immigration status, ancestry, national origin, age, gender, sexual orientation, religion, family status, veteran status, and/or physical or mental disability. This position requires an appreciation of the cultural wealth students bring to their college experience, particularly those with African American, Asian American/Pacific Islander, Latino/a/x, and Native American heritage.

  • Knowledge of the major epistemological and theoretical frameworks informing the discipline of ethnic studies, including intersectionality.

  • Expertise and experience in ethnic studies pedagogy that bridges scholarship, social justice, and community activism.

  • Preparedness to promote anti-racism across the curriculum, classroom, and campus community.

  • Capacity to fulfill department leadership responsibilities including, but not limited to, curriculum and program development, assessment of program learning outcomes, and conducting annual and 6-year program reviews.

  • Demonstrated potential to build partnerships with community members and organizations.

  • Adeptness in adapting to evolving circumstances, engaging with multiple perspectives, and communicating with effectiveness and collegiality.

About the Department: 


Cabrillo College is establishing an Ethnic Studies Department to serve the needs of all students. We are seeking a dynamic educator, leader, and community builder to help us further realize our vision of providing student-centered, equity-driven, anti-racist, and decolonizing curriculum and instruction across the college. Cabrillo College currently has a Skills Certificate in Latin American and Latino/a/x Studies. Cabrillo is currently aiming to create an associates degree in Ethnic Studies to add to our current Skills Certificate in Latin American and Latino/a/x Studies, and to add an associate degree in Social Justice Studies with an emphasis in Latin American and Latino/a/x Studies that is pending approval at the California Community College Chancellor's Office.


Although the Ethnic Studies Department will be based in the Human Arts and Social Sciences (HASS) Division alongside disciplines such as anthropology, history, political science, sociology, and women’s studies, our goal is to build on existing cross-disciplinary relationships and further connect the social and behavioral sciences, arts, and humanities. This new department will be well-situated to collaborate with Student Affairs, including the Office of Student Equity. 

Examples of Duties

  • Teach assigned classes, which may include evening or off-campus assignments

  • Engage in participatory governance committees, processes, and initiatives such as Guided Pathways

  • Maintain timely and accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and academic progress

  • Provide academic assistance and related services to students during scheduled office hours

  • Cooperate with and participate as may be required in District investigations and/or student grievance matters of alleged unlawful harassment, discrimination, and retaliation

  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff

  • Complete required District trainings such as Title IX, Mandated Reporter, EEO/Diversity/Elimination of Bias, Workplace Safety, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Education from a U.S. Department of Education-recognized accredited organization and licensure qualifications in one of the two disciplines listed below:


Ethnic Studies:

  • Master’s in the ethnic studies field OR
  • Master’s in American Studies/Ethnicity, Latino Studies, La Raza Studies, Central American Studies, Latin American Studies, Cross Cultural Studies, Race and Ethnic relations, Asian-American Studies, or African-American Studies OR
  • The *Equivalent OR
  • A lifetime California Community College Instructor Credential in Ethnic Studies
Interdisciplinary Studies:

  • Master’s in the interdisciplinary area OR Master’s in one of the disciplines included in the interdisciplinary area and upper division or graduate course work in at least one other constituent discipline (NOTE: The interdisciplinary studies discipline is provided to allow for those cases where it is locally determined that a course must be taught by someone with qualifications that exceed a single discipline. The constituent disciplines can include any disciplines found in the Master’s List.)
  • The *Equivalent OR
  • A lifetime California Community College Instructor Credential in Interdisciplinary Studies

Required Professional Expertise:

  • Currency and depth of knowledge in the applicable professional field, curriculum development, review and assessment of student learning outcomes

  • Knowledge and understanding of programs such as Guided Pathways, that address commitment to equity-minded and culturally responsive teaching strategies enhancing student success

Desired Qualifications/Performance Expectations:

  • Successful online teaching experience

  • Experience teaching ethnic studies, preferably at the community college or lower-division level

  • Experience teaching Introduction to Latino/a/x Studies or related courses

  • Familiarity with the use of technology in innovative, forward-thinking teaching and learning practices

  • Bilingual skill in English/Spanish

  • Experience in community engagement and outreach

  • Experience mentoring and supporting students in the transfer process
