The Santa Clarita Community College District/College of the Canyons is seeking a full-time Instructional Laboratory Coordinator – The Learning Center (Mathematics) in the Instruction division.

"BIG PICTURE" RESPONSIBILITY:

Under the supervision of the Associate Dean, Learning Resources and Director of The Learning Center (TLC), the Instructional Laboratory Coordinator participates in the daily operation of TLC by coordinating a wide variety of duties for the Center including overseeing face-to-face and online tutoring activities; hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluating math, science, and engineering tutors for the Center; developing and facilitating tutor training activities; implementing assessment plans to measure the success of Center services; implementing programs for expanding services; and collaborating with relevant academic departments to support student learning and success.  Performs other related duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  1. Coordinates the operation of TLC tutoring in math, science, and engineering broadly defined.  Performs specialized and technical duties to assure efficient operations.
  2. Coordinates the recruitment, hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluating of tutors and clerical staff.  Monitors tutoring sessions, provides work direction, and assists with supervision as needed.
  3. Acts as liaison with academic departments, as well as with appropriate student services departments and programs to promote alignment of tutor training and other TLC activities to advance student success.
  4. Collaborates with math, science, and engineering faculty to develop and enhance academic support services and resources for a diverse student body, including Supplemental Instruction workshops and creating Guide Learning Activities materials.
  5. Provides specialized trainings for math, science, and engineering tutors on best practices for face-to-face and online tutoring.
  6. Implements assessment plans to measure the success of Center services, and develops and implements ways to improve effectiveness and efficiency.
  7. Researches, tests, implements, and maintains online tutorial software applications and processes to provide effective online services and online workshops to enhance student access.
  8. Presents group tutoring on topics related to math, science, and engineering, and study skills. Assists with individual tutoring as needed during high impact times.
  9. Prepares hiring paperwork, and ensures employee timesheets are completed accurately and submitted to payroll in a timely matter.
  10. Attends department and school meetings and other District committee meetings to ensure communication and coordination of programs and services offered by TLC.  Attends conferences to enhance professional development and increase the operational effectiveness of the Center.
  11. Monitors area expenditures to ensure expenses do not exceed allocated annual budget.  Prepares projections as directed, and develops and maintains a system to account for all salary expenses.
  12. Develops print and digital marketing materials and strategies to promote the Center’s programs and services.
  13. Assists with outreach efforts including the coordination of special events, programs, or initiatives designed to promote TLC, its services, and student success.
  14. Reviews and maintains current knowledge of class subject matter, reference/learning resources, equipment, computers and software within area of expertise.
  15. Effectively interfaces in difficult situations, assesses problems, and suggests potential solutions.
  16. Performs a variety of clerical duties and responds to questions from faculty, staff, students, and the general public.
  17. Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience:

Two (2) years of full-time equivalent work experience in an educational setting at a community college, university, high school, or other related community agency.

Education: 

Education equivalent to an Associate’s degree (60 semester units) from an accredited institution is required, which includes at least 12 semester units of transferable coursework in math, science, or engineering.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor of Arts degree or higher strongly preferred in math, science, or engineering a related area. Work experience in a lead role in an educational setting. Work experience utilizing educational technology to support student success.

DEMONSTRATED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Position requires knowledge of: 

  • Title 5 regulations relevant to tutoring centers.
  • Basic principles, theories, methods and techniques used in learning centers.
  • Computer software programs and educational technologies necessary to coordinate the day to day work of TLC functions, including but not limited to the District’s administrative software, MS Office products, Canvas, and the Internet.
  • A wide variety of methods and equipment used in the tutoring process with emphasis on computer-assisted instruction and online tutoring.
  • Use of educational technologies.
  • Fundamentals of learning center organization and management.

  

Position requires ability to:

  • Demonstrate and promote a customer-oriented approach.
  • Plan, organize, coordinate and facilitate the operation of a tutorial program.
  • Use initiative and problem-solving skills in carrying out responsibilities.
  • Read, interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Develop or modify learning center procedures in cooperation with other staff.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a variety of people at all organizational levels in an academic environment.
  • Independently maintain currency of educational technology, computer programs/software, web design, graphic design, and related tools as technology evolves.
  • Schedule, monitor, and review the performance of college assistants and short-term staff.
  • Establish and maintain comprehensive and accurate files, records, and filing systems; prepare concise and complete reports as required.
  • Meet deadlines and handle multiple simultaneous projects.
  • Work independently with little direction and as part of a team.
  • Work at all district sites and exercise schedule flexibility (day, evening, and weekend hours).
  • Exercise discretion and safeguard the confidentiality of information.
  • Serve as liaison between the department, other college departments, and the community.
  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
  • Demonstrate clear evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

SALARY PLACEMENT

Salary placement will be on Range 35 of Classified Represented Salary Schedule B ($5,016.00 - $8,452.00 per month). 

Initial salary step placement for new employees is customarily at step 1, 2, or 3 ($5,016.00 / $5,311.00 / $5,619.00 per month) of this 20-step salary range.

 Probationary period for new Classified employees is one year. Work year is 12 calendar months. The normal workweek for this position is 40 hours. Paid holiday, discretionary, and sick time are provided. Ten vacation days accrue during the first year of employment. A regular work schedule will be assigned, with the ability to occasionally work a flexible schedule as needed with supervisor approval.

DISTRICT CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEE BENEFITS

Full-time employees are provided with a diversified program that includes medical, dental and vision insurance including dependent coverage, disability and life insurance as well as Section 125 options.  These benefits commence on the first of the month following date of hire. Professional development opportunities are provided to all employees.  Educational incentive is available to eligible Classified Represented and Confidential employees. 

 RETIREMENT: Classified employees contribute to the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS), a defined benefit retirement plan through the State of California.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Position requires sitting and viewing a computer monitor for extended periods of time plus frequent periods of standing and walking, which may include climbing staircases; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a typewriter and computer keyboard and related equipment; stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, twisting/turning, bending at the waist, and reaching in awkward positions; frequently exerting 10 to 20 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects; occasionally must be able to lift and stack objects up to 50 pounds; hearing and speaking to communicate and provide information to others; vision to read printed materials and computer monitor; handling and working with various materials and objects; and travel from site-to-site.
