The Santa Clarita Community College District/College of the Canyons is seeking a full-time  Director, Operations and Marketing Communications (Foundation) in the Foundation office.

College of the Canyons is part of the Santa Clarita Community College District and is designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), enrolling approximately 32,000 students each academic year. "BIG PICTURE" RESPONSIBILITY:

Under the supervision and direction of the Executive Director, Foundation, the Director, Operations and Marketing Communications is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating the Foundation’s communications, operations,  and partnership development in a highly interactive and collaborative team environment to support the Foundation’s mission. In these efforts, the Director will work effectively to design media, implement policy and procedures, partner and develop internal and external stakeholders, advance public engagement through online/digital engagement, social media, direct mail, events and other appropriate communication channels. Perform other duties as assigned.

Canyons Hall

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  1. Develops, implements, and evaluates the Foundation’s strategic communications plan in collaboration with the college’s Public Information Office.
  2. Communicates the Foundation’s vision, mission, strategic framework, and fundraising activities to relevant and specified audiences; drafts, edits, finalizes and disseminates written materials including articles for placement in various media sources, editorials, blog posts, info graphics, social media content, interactive presentations, and other associated materials. Works collaboratively with Foundation staff to effectively promote all Foundation-supported and funded activities and products to relevant audiences through appropriate effective communications channels.
  3. Develops, implements, supervises, and evaluates all aspects of an established online and social media operation, as well as the Foundation’s media and public relations.
  4. Leads an innovative website presence. Directs, supervises, and evaluates all aspects of the Foundation’s website to serve as a key multimedia resource for its core audiences by directing web development and maintenance activities, and creating novel design strategies to bolster the functional aspects of the Foundation’s website for maximum audience engagement.
  5. Works collaboratively with the college’s Public Information Office, increasing visibility of Foundation’s efforts through effective media presence. Oversees activities by effectively working with national, regional, and trade media covering higher education issues through media pitching, social media engagement, and monitors news coverage and external events in an effort to seek opportunities for promoting the Foundation’s partnership efforts.
  6. Ensures internal/external communications alignment. Acts as the communications liaison between the college and the Foundation Board to insure Board members are aware of college needs, activities and direction.
  7. Identifies and coordinates external communications opportunities. Increases the Foundation’s public presence by proactively seeking out and assisting in the development and preparation of opportunities for the Executive Director and appropriate Foundation staff to represent the Foundation externally through speaking engagements, press appearances, conferences, and others.
  8. Collaborates and supports Foundation image and branding efforts. Manages the Foundation’s image and branding efforts through public awareness to ensure a cohesive public perception of its vision, work, and activities, and in alignment with the college’s brand strategies.
  9. Manages and monitors integrated direct mail marketing campaigns, annual reports, impact reports and newsletters with relevant Foundation Public Information Office staff.
  10. Builds successful team and organizational culture. Works with the Executive Director and the Foundation Board Chair on Board Development activities to include recruitment, orientation and training.
  11. Develops and maintains under the direction of the Executive Director the Foundation operations guidelines, contracts and other legal documents and processes as outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding between the Foundation and the Santa Clarita Community College District.
  12. Supervises the coordination of, and support to, the Foundation Finance and Audit Committees with the Foundation Treasurer.
  13. Works with the Treasurer and District Fiscal Services staff to ensure that all fiscal matters of the Foundation are handled according to the Foundation’s By-laws, policies, procedures, rules and regulations and appropriate state and federal laws, rules and regulations.
  14. Supervises all fiscal matters including budgeting and accounting, working closely with the Business Services Division of the college in relation to all fiscal matters of the Foundation.
  15. Maintains Fund Development records such as gift processing and acknowledgement, budgets and foundation investments.
  16. Participates on college committees to allow for a broad understanding of college operations and needs.
  17. Provides assistance with all fundraising activities as needed and directed by the Executive Director.
  18. Performs other related duties as assigned.

The College of the Canyons Foundation was established in 1987 as the College’s 501(c)(3) non-profit auxiliary organization formed to raise philanthropic support for College of the Canyons. Since its inception, the Foundation has:

  • Raised more than $30 million over the last 28 years to support programs and students;
  • Established more than 220 scholarships that are awarded annually;
  • Raised more than $5 million toward the University Center and Culinary Arts Capital Campaigns;
  • Raised more than $1 million for endowed scholarships through the Bernard Osher Foundation initiative;
  • Granted more than $300,000 over the last ten years for mini-grants to fund innovative projects and academic programs;
  • Established the Alumni and Athletic Halls of Fame;
  • Established endowments for the Arts, the Library and the Athletic Track; and
  • Co-founded the Santa Clarita Valley Nonprofit Leadership Network that serves more than 100 local nonprofit organizations and agencies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Experience:

Four (4) years of full-time equivalent experience in nonprofit, marketing, public relations, or community relations fields including two (2) years in a lead or supervisory capacity. 

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Business, Marketing, Non-Profit Leadership, or related discipline.

  

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Strong written and verbal skills essential.
  • Experience with marketing and advertising.
  • Knowledge of key Santa Clarita Valley businesses, non-profits, schools and school support groups, service and fraternal organizations, etc.
  • Advanced degree (Masters).

SALARY PLACEMENT

This twelve (12) month per year position will be on an individual contract. This classified administrator position will be placed on Range 11 of the Administrator Salary Schedule. Step placement is based on experience. Initial salary step placement is customarily at step 1, 2, or 3 ($8,193/$8,316/$8,441 per month) of this 20-step salary range. All administrators are on an employment contract and exempt from overtime and compensatory time accumulation.

DISTRICT CLASSIFIED ADMINISTATIVE EMPLOYEE BENEFITS

Full-time employees are provided with a diversified employee benefits program that includes sick time, vacation time, discretionary time, medical, dental and vision insurance including dependent coverage, disability and life insurance as well as Section 125 options.  These benefits commence on the first of the month following date of hire.  Professional development and educational incentive opportunities are provided to all classified administrative employees.  

Classified employees contribute to the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS), a defined benefit retirement plan through the State of California. 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Position is a stationary position and requires use of a computer for extended periods of time plus frequent periods of movement from one area to another, which may include traversing to different floors of a building; operating a computer and related equipment; communicating and providing information to others; working with various materials and objects; frequently exert 10 to 20 pounds of force to move objects; may be exposed to occasional contact with dissatisfied individuals; and travel from site-to-site. In the event of an emergency, employees will be relied upon to serve as emergency workers.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Successful completion of background fingerprint clearance, pre-employment physical examination (disabilities not related to the physical job will not affect the application process) and TB screening.
